Quantum Science awarded UK’s first IR lead-free QD patent

News
Lead-free quantum dot alternative is "key to unlocking widespread adoption in consumer and industrial applications", says CEO

Quantum Science, an innovator in short-wave infrared (SWIR) quantum dot technology with its INFIQ QDs, has been granted the UK’s first patent for infrared lead-free quantum dots.

The company's IP portfolio now encompasses 11 patent families with 77 patents filed across key global markets. This latest grant will enable the company to continue building its strategy of protecting innovations across the entire quantum dot value chain – from synthesis and surface modification to inks, ligand exchange and device integration.

Hao Pang, CEO and founder of Quantum Science, said: “This is a significant breakthrough for both Quantum Science and the UK technology sector. By securing the UK’s first infrared lead-free quantum dot patent, we are demonstrating our ability to deliver technology that is world-class in performance while aligning with regulations around lead-based materials.”

The introduction of a lead-free alternative to conventional lead sulphide-based QDs opens the door to a new generation of applications that balance high performance with regulatory compliance.

“Lead-free quantum dots hold the key to unlocking widespread adoption in consumer and industrial applications without compromising on performance or sustainability,” said Pang. “This latest patent cements Quantum Science’s role as the industry’s IP leader, further strengthening one of the most comprehensive QD patent portfolios in the world.”

He added: “This invention is the product of years of dedicated research and innovation, and it reflects the extraordinary capabilities of our team and our partners. By strengthening our already world-leading patent portfolio, we are ensuring that our partners and customers benefit from both pioneering technology and the freedom to operate with confidence in a highly competitive marketplace.”
