Lumileds introduces new package for car headlights
Lumileds has announced the Luxeon Altilon SMD-A package for automotive headlighting applications including front fog, low and high beam, and adaptive driving beam (ADB).
It is claimed to be the thinnest single-chip addressable LED, with a z-height of only 433µm, which allows for optical structures to be designed with greater accuracy and efficacy. This allows the headlamp system to be optimised as the optics can be designed closer to the LED thereby improving optical efficiency, according to Lumileds .
“Luxeon Altilon SMD-A facilitates the highest, optimised performance. Its unique pad layout enables single-die addressability for native bi-function headlighting in a single footprint while maintaining source luminance. These capabilities significantly simplify the lamp architecture for cost-effective, time-to-market solutions,” said Nicolai Duongtran, product marketing manager for Automotive Headlighting at Lumileds.
Furthernore, the small edges of the Luxeon Altilon SMD-A are said to improve contrast and produce a sharp, natural cutoff. Luminance has been boosted by reducing the gap between light emitting areas (LEAs) to 70µm and achieving an optimal die-to-phosphor size.
The package is designed for compatibility with Al-IMS to ensure cost efficient reflow soldering robustness. It has a Cu-based leadframe for higher thermal capabilities and is suitable for use with metal core PCBs.
The Luxeon Altilon SMD-A is already designed into 2026 model-year vehicles. Lumileds is also using the new LED in its Luxeon LxN L1B Gen3 homologated module. These modules are standard, 'bulb-like' options.
The Luxeon Altilon SMD-A is available in four configurations, a 1×2, a 1×3, a 1×4, and a 1×5 for mass production manufacturing.
