Motorola Semiconductor's GaAs Fab Wins QS-9000 Certification

Fab will re-double capacity again by September of 2000 with conversion to 6-inch wafers

PHOENIX, AZ Motorola has officially received QS-9000 certification of its Compound Semiconductor-1 wafer fabrication facility (CS-1). All of Motorola s gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor devices are fabricated in the CS-1 facility. This certification assures customers that the best procedures and highest quality standards are rigorously maintained throughout the wafer manufacturing process. The certification of Motorola s CS-1 GaAs fab is important because the QS-9000 standard contains the verbatim text of the ISO 9001:1994 standard. The QS-9000 standard has over 100 additional auditable requirements added to the ISO 9001 Quality System. The third-party certification to QS-9000 also results in registration to ISO 9001. This ISO standard is the product of the International Organization for Standardization, and has already had an enormous impact on worldwide manufacturing quality.
Motorola s registration process consisted of a self-, or first-party, assessment of the company s own systems, followed by a third-party assessment conducted by an accredited ISO 9000 quality systems registrar. Motorola s CS-1 facility was certified on July 1, 1999, and will be undergoing semiannual third-party audits to maintain its certification.

Motorola has doubled its GaAs capacity every year since 1997, and once again completed the process of doubling the wafer output of the CS-1 fab at the end of 1998. Work immediately began to re-double that 1500 wafers per week capacity by converting the entire CS-1 facility to handle 6-inch GaAs wafers. This conversion is on schedule for completion in September of 2000, and it will again more than double Motorola s GaAs wafer capacity. Motorola s CS-1 will be one of the first few 6-inch GaAs fabs in production in the industry.

As the world s #1 producer of embedded processors, Motorola s Semiconductor Products Sector offers multiple DigitalDNA"! solutions which enable its customers to create new business opportunities in the consumer, networking and computing, transportation, and wireless communications markets. Motorola s
worldwide semiconductor sales were $7.3 billion (USD) in 1998.
