Strategy Analytics Forecasts Continued Expansion for Fibre-optics Market Despite Slowdown

Source: Strategy Analytics, Inc.

Fibre-optic analog IC market to grow at a CAAGR of 34%

Boston, MA. According to a study released by Strategy Analytics, Inc, GaAs technology will become the predominant technology in the fibre-optic analog ICs market which will grow from $350m in 1999 to $1,621m in 2004, a CAAGR (compound annual average growth rate) of 34%. The explosion in the demand for increased bandwidth is shifting the focus to the 10Gbps market.

These findings are presented in a study entitled "Fibre-optic Analog ICs Market" and published by Strategy Analytics within its continuous information service, GaAs and High Speed Circuits Service.

"While the current economic malaise has resulted in GaAs companies revising projected earnings, the fibre-optics market for analog ICs will provide a growth market for the GaAs industry" observed Asif Anwar, an analyst with the firm s GaAs and High Speed Circuits strategic advisory service. "The 10Gbps market will become the largest market and will be dominated by GaAs technology. However, GaAs companies will have to significantly reduce ASPs in the near future if they are to remain competitive in the face of an onslaught from SiGe".

The report explores the relationships between increased demand for bandwidth and technology uptake predicting that the move towards 10Gbps and beyond, and a shift towards a datacentric focus, will result in a shift away from bare dies to modules. Furthermore, there will be increased integration of TIAs with the photodetector diodes in small form factor modules for use in emerging GiGAbit Ethernet and fibre channel datacom markets. Moving forward, the 40Gbps market is expected to become the second largest market for fibre-optic systems by 2004 and will be dominated by InP.
