US Super Bowl on Sunday will be played entirely under LED lighting

LED fixtures to reduce power consumption by 75 percent

Kicking off the International year of light this Sunday, Cree, the US LED lighting company, will be centre stage at the Super Bowl.

The game on Sunday will be played entirely under LED lighting using Cree LEDs installed in fixtures by Ephesus Lighting. Cree is currently the only LED component technology to fully illuminate NFL stadiums.

The new system uses just 310,000 watts of energy as compared to the 1.24 million watts needed to power the previous system, providing a 75 percent reduction in overall sports lighting energy consumption.

LEDs were previously not viable for full stadium lighting, suggesting 100 percent LED adoption is within reach, according to Cree.
