TV display shipments are trending down on a unit base each year while the weighted average size is going up annually. The 2020 TV display shipment reach 276M, with 272M of LCD TV panel and 4.4M of OLED TV panel. The 276M is a 5 percent decline YoY from 2019.

In 2021, it is expected the TV display panel shipment to reach 274M, with 1 percent YoY decline. The decline is due to the maturity of the TV market. However, in terms of TV display technology evolution, the market is not mature yet with many new picture and form factor performance improvement technologies on the horizon.

The key driving forces of these high-end TV display are attributed to the trend towards bigger screens, cost reduction, increasing capacity and technology availability and improvements in reliability and component maturity. Consumers are also gradually paying more attention to picture performance and form factor features with the responding cost premium.

LCD panel prices are going up and down cyclically but high-end TV display ASP with the larger size and better specification will be crucial to enlarge the total market scale of the display, especially for new technologies like OLED, Mini LED backlight, QLED and QD OLED and Micro LED display.

Omdia forecasts that the total TV display revenue will grow from $33.2 billion in 2020 to $47.4 billion in 2025. High-end TV displays will be playing a critical part in driving the TV display revenues up. The high-end TV display revenues will be reaching $27.1 billion in 2025, surpassing the standard LCD TV display revenues, and taking 57 percent of the total TV display revenues.

David Hsieh, senior director, displays research at Omdia, commented: “We see the whole TV display supply chain, from the component and materials suppliers, display manufacturers, Mini/Micro LED makers, backlight assemblers TV OEM ODM and retailers are more devoting to the high-end TV. OLED TV and QLED TV have won the heart of the premium TV consumers and keep expanding. 2021 can be viewed as the first year for the Mini LED Backlight LCD TV and QD OLED TV to start. In the long term, the Micro LED TV and QNED TV will take the top premium space. All of these are pointing to the promising future of the high-end TV display, which is viewed as great prospects to enhance the display revenues, enabling the display makers’ technology evolution and also nourish the high-end customer needs."
