Nitres Receives $1.4 Million Contract on UV Photodetectors
Westlake Village, CA. Nitres has been awarded a $1,424,424 contract for development of "Ultraviolet Solar Blind Focal Plane Arrays" by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Washington, DC. The contract is procured through the Air Force Materiel Command, USAF, Hanscom AFB, MA. The funds will support the development of solar blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors and focal place arrays which are very sensitive to ultraviolet light and reject visible emission from the sun.
Commercial applications of such UV photodetectors include chemical pollution monitoring and biological sensing systems. Another application would be monitoring of human UV exposure from the sun s radiation. For example, a wristwatch size UV photodetector would allow personal monitoring of exposure to the sunburning UV rays from the sun.
Fred Blum, CEO of Nitres, said "This contract builds upon Nitres technical leadership in gallium nitride-based ultraviolet photodetectors. With the funds from this contract, Nitres will develop a new generation of high sensitivity devices."
Nitres is a leader in the development of semiconductor devices such as solid state lamps, microwave power transistors, and ultraviolet photodetectors made from gallium nitride based materials.
