Toyoda Gosei wins white LED orders

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Toyoda Gosei Co. has received its first orders to manufacture white LEDs. It will start producing, sometime after April, about 10 million units per month, mostly for use in cellular phones with color LCD screens.

Toyoda s LED business, based around the sale of blue and green LEDs, attained sales of 17.7 billion yen (~ $132 million) for the financial year ended March 2001, accounting for 30% of the company s operating profit for the year. However, with the slowdown in the cell phone market and the shift from monochromatic to full-color LCDs progressing rapidly, demand for blue LEDs has declined. Toyoda s are forecast to fall slightly to 17 billion yen for the year ending March 2002.

White LEDs, which are required as backlights for full-color LCD screens in mobile phones, represent an important new market for Toyoda. The company aims to grab a considerable share of the white LED market, which is dominated by Nichia, by offering low prices. First-year sales of 10 billion yen are targeted, increasing to 40 billion yen in fiscal 2004.
