Alcatel Optronics introduces new miniaturized 2.5 Gbit/s lasers and receivers

Alcatel Optronics has launched two new active modules in standard mini-DIL packages: a compact 1300 nm DFB laser module and a receiver with avalanche photodiode. Targeting metropolitan applications up to 2.5 Gbit/s, these miniaturized products offer system manufacturers ease to use and cost effective opto-electronic solutions.

These compact lasers and detectors are designed to meet the cost reduction requirements needed in metropolitan applications. Planar silicon substrate technology is the key building block to achieve this objective. In simplifying the alignment of optical fiber to active diodes, planar technology reduces assembly time by more than 50%. It allows high volume manufacturing and easy board mounting.

"These new DFB laser and APD detector products represent a key step for Alcatel Optronics in micro packaging and hybrid integration," explained Philippe Brégi, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel Optronics. "Their very compact size coupled with high performance and low power consumption offer the highest flexibility in the design of the new generation of cost competitive integrated 2.5 Gbit/s optical interfaces. These solutions meet the full requirements of metropolitan systems."

The Alcatel 1922 LMS laser module allows optical transmission up to 40 km and covers the 1260-1360 nm window. It is directly modulated at bit rates up to 2.7 Gbit/s (necessary for applications with FEC), and has an optical output power of up to 2 mW. In a FlatPack standard package Mini-DIL compatible, the Alcatel 1922 LMS combines a distributed feedback InGaAsP-based laser chip and a monitoring photodiode. This laser module is offered in both gull-wing and through-hole pins versions for easy board mounting.

The Alcatel 1924 DMS optical receiver consists of an InGaAs avalanche photodiode that possesses a low-capacitance active area for maximum responsivity and speed. Coupled with a single mode fiber, it integrates a linear SiGe preamplifier. With an overload of -5 dBm and a sensitivity of -34 dBm, this receiver module comes in a standard 8-pin DIL package for easy surface-mounting onto boards. It also contributes to reducing the footprint of receiver interfaces. Charlotte Laurent-Ottomane (US)
