Bandwidth9 introduces new tunable laser subsystem

Bandwidth9, a manufacturer of in flexible, reliable, and cost-effective optical components and subsystems, today announced its new MetroFlex G2 Series Tunable Optical Transmitter for metro optical network wavelength applications. The G2 series provides an ideal transmitter solution for remote wavelength configuration and sparing applications targeted at reducing operational costs within metro optical networks. Featuring an ultra-small form factor and 0 dBm output, the MetroFlex G2 is substantially similar to the size and power requirements of fixed wavelength transmitters, enabling a seamless transition to Bandwidth9 s tunable technology within fixed wavelength architectures.

The MetroFlex G2 is the industry s only tunable transmitter that delivers wide tuning in the C- or L-bands in a small, highly reliable, 2" x 3" (5 x 7.5 cm) package. Incorporating Bandwidth9 s directly modulated VCSEL-based tunable laser, wavelength locking technology and amplification all within a single integrated package, the MetroFlex G2 offers continuous tuning which avoids the uncertainty and risk of mode hopping.

"Based on the latest research and our own analysis, we have proven the economic benefits of tunable lasers for applications and operations areas such as sparing, dynamic provisioning and inventory management," said Hatch Graham, Chairman and CEO of Bandwidth9. "Our new MetroFlex G2 product enables carriers to reduce both capital and operational expense, and increase revenue through remote provisioning applications."

The product is offered in a variety of tuning options, ranging from 8 to 20 ITU channels at 100GHz spacing, and 16 to 40 ITU channels at 50GHz spacing in the C- or L-band. At less than 1 msec, the time required to tune and lock to any channel is by far the fastest and most reliable tunable technology in the industry. The G2 is directly modulated from OC-3 through OC-48 without the need for an external modulator and provides greater than 1 mW (0 dBm) modulated output power per channel, controlled with a simple RS-232 interface.

Bandwidth9 also offers a directly-modulated, non-amplified version of the G2 for those network equipment manufacturers who prefer to integrate their own amplification schemes. Both versions - and any future versions - of the G2 share a common manufacturing platform and core technology to enable mass production volume manufacturing economics across the product line.

The new MetroFlex G2 is priced below $5k for low quantities and reduced pricing for higher volume purchases. General availability is scheduled for 2H 2002, with prototype previews available today. Margie Bennett
