Lumileds to supply LED backlights for Mitsubishi displays

LumiLeds Lighting has entered a strategic relationship with Mitsubishi Electric to supply the first liquid crystal display (LCD) modules containing high brightness LEDs. The deal involves the company s Luxeon high-flux LEDs in new thin film transistor-LCD modules from Mitsubishi, and is expected to provide higher brightness, better color fidelity and longer life than traditional backlighting solutions for display applications.

The first monitors to feature the LEDs will appear by the end of 2002, and will be manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric s ADI (Advanced Display Inc.) subsidiary. LumiLeds Luxeon LEDs will replace conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamps, providing a system with will include a non-degrading ultra-bright display offering twice the brightness of traditional LCD monitors, as well as the ability to self-adjust to maintain brightness levels throughout the life of the monitor. In addition, the monitor will offer better color fidelity and clarity, providing more saturated and lifelike colors, and a 50,000 hour life expectancy (twice that of fluorescent-based LCD monitors). A final advantage is provided by the absence of mercury such as used in cold cathode fluorescent lamps.

One of the first applications for the new LCD module is expected to be a large high-resolution display for desktop publishing professionals, now under development by ADI. Others include stand-alone and PC-bundled monitors for desktop PCs and notebook PC displays, LCD TVs and industrial displays.

The relationship with Mitsubishi Electric also follows closely on the deal with FIMI Philips to develop a Luxeon backlight to improve color fidelity in new medical monitors. Doug Silkwood
