Ericsson introduces new 10 Gbit/s EML
The PGT 20406 laser module will find its way into SDH/SONET, DWDM and 10 Gigabit Ethernet applications in both long-haul and metro optical networking systems with up to 80 km link distances. A common link distance in existing 2.5 Gbit/s systems is 80 km, using the PGT 20406 it is possible to replace four 2.5 Gbit/s laser modules with one device without the need to alter the network infrastructure. This reduces the number of lasers and/or increases the transmission capacity in the systems.
The new laser has an RF extinction ratio of greater than 10 dB. The unit offers excellent modulator chirp resulting in a low dispersion penalty of less than or equal to 2 dB over 80 km (1600 ps/nm) in a standard single mode fiber, allowing the module to be used in long reach applications. The laser module is available with ITU-T wavelengths over the entire C-band range (1530-1563 nm) making it highly suitable for DWDM applications. The PGT 20406 s high bandwidth enables data rates up to 10.7 Gbit/s, allowing it to be used in systems with FEC (Forward Error Correction) or 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
The new 10 Gbit/s EML comes in an industry standard 7-pin butterfly package with standard pinning and a GPO connector, enabling second sourcing and ensuring drop-in compatibility with other 10 Gbit/s EMLs from Ericsson Microelectronics. The package also contains a thermoelectric cooler, thermistor, monitor photodiode and optical isolator.
The PGT 20406 is fabricated and assembled in-house at Ericsson s InP chip fab and module assembly line. The product has been fully qualified according to Telcordia standards, ensuring high product reliability and quality.
