Motorola and Siemens work together to accelerate 3G handset introduction
Motorola, the second largest handset manufacturer, has announced a relationship with Siemens, the number 3 supplier, to accelerate the availability of 3G handsets.
Siemens is to develop handsets for the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) format using Motorola s i.300 chipset and software platform.
In the meantime, Siemens will sell handsets manufactured by Motorola but carrying the Siemens name. The German company will introduce its first 3G handsets, based on Motorola s A820, in the fourth quarter of this year.
The two companies predict they will sell as many as 2 million 3G handsets next year out of a market of 5-7 million units.
This is the latest in a series of agreements in the mobile handset business. Several Japanese manufacturers have joined forces and Ericsson has teamed up with Sony. Ericsson has also announced technology licensing deals with Samsung and LG.
