Sterling Semiconductor awarded $9 million for SiC development
The two-year contracts include initiatives for the development of conducting substrates for high-power electronics as well as semi-insulating substrates for high-frequency electronics for communications and radar.
"Our contract bid to DARPA responded to their requirements for the basic materials needed to develop military systems of the future. At the same time, Sterling expects that its research under the contracts will lead to significant commercial applications," said Robert Soran, President and CEO of UTC.
The contracts are not just good news for Sterling, but also for Umicore of Belgium, which has agreed to buy Sterling from UTC.
The US DoD is funding projects at a number of US companies involved in wide bandgap semiconductor research and development. Recent announcements of contract awards include Cermet for the development of GaN substrates, Crystal IS for the development of AlN substrates, and Cree for the development of UV-LEDs and lasers for biological agent detection.
