Akzo Nobel and Mochem form metalorganics alliance

Two leading suppliers of metalorganic precursors have announced a merger plan.
Akzo Nobel’s High Purity Metalorganics (HPMO) unit and Mochem GmbH of Marburg in Germany have unveiled a plan to form a new metalorganics business. Both companies say the move is consistent with planned expansion and development of products and services for the compound semiconductor industry.

Founded in 1993 as a spin-off of the Material Science Center at Philipps-University, Mochem is a leading manufacturer of liquid group V products such as TBA (tertiarybutyl arsine), TBP (tertiarybutyl phosphine) and dimethylhydrazine. The company provides batch certification using characterization of epitaxial test layers through a process known as “Epi-Proof”.

Akzo Nobel manufactures a range of metalorganics for MOCVD and CBE such as TMG (trimethyl gallium), TMI (trimethyl indium) and TMAL (trimethyl aluminum). The company began an expansion at its Deer Park facility in Houston, Texas last year to meet demand for TMI, increasing production capacity by 50%.

“Through this merger we will be able to provide an outstanding range of III/V metalorganics in Epi-Proof quality to customers as well as the comprehensive range of dopants for MOVPE and related technologies,” said Barry Cottrell, Global Business Manager for Akzo Nobel HPMO. “Operations will continue at both Houston, Texas and at Mochem’s site in Marburg, Germany.”
