Alcatel Optronics cuts 25% of its workforce

The persistent market downturn is to blame for further job cuts at Alcatel Optronics.
Alcatel Optronics will cut 25% of its 1800-strong workforce by the end this year as part of a new "Industrial Redeployment Plan". The move affects all manufacturing sites but optical chip fabrication in Nozay, France, remains relatively intact: a company source said there are not yet any plans to shed jobs at that particular site.

Fiber bragg grating production in Gatimeau, Quebec is to be shifted to Alcatel Optronic s Livingston plant in Scotland, with job losses at the Quebec plant reaching 120. The plan also includes relocating the optical fiber amplifier/optical interface subsystem assembly in Illkirch, France back to Nozay.

Job losses at the Plano, Texas, board assembly plant are to be made in a bid to reduce production, while a management buyout will see an end to MEMs and planar design activities. There are no lay-off plans for pump module manufacturing in Lannion, France.

Blaming the "persistent market downturn", chief executive Jean-Christophe Giroux said; "An action plan was initiated a year ago and we are now accelerating out efforts to better adjust our cost structure to current conditions. These cost-savings will be effective in the fourth quarter of this year."
