Ericsson sells microelectronics business to Infineon

Infineon Technologies has bought Ericsson Microelectronics for Euro 400 million
Ericsson is to sell its microelectronics arm, Ericsson Microelectronics, to Infineon Technologies. The Euro 400 million ($ 378 million) share-based deal is expected to close this summer. An Ericsson source said that the deal does not include its optoelectronics group, which makes lasers and other fiber-optic components.

The move is in line with Ericsson s ongoing plan to focus on its core business of providing systems and services to telecoms operators. The deal also makes Infineon one of Ericsson s key suppliers of components for wireless infrastructure and mobile phones.

"This strategic partnership strengthens our communications business and builds up our wireless design expertise," said Infineon s CEO, Ulrich Schumacher. "We will team up with Ericsson as a leader in the wireless world and a strategic partner."

The deal includes Ericsson Microelectronics in Sweden and related global activities. Infineon will take over 700 Ericsson employees as well as products, manufacturing, and research and development. Ericsson will retain its 600 manufacturing staff that are based at its manufacturing facilities in Stockholm, Sweden.
