Nokia edges towards a 40% market share
In the face of stiff competition, Nokia has strengthened its position as the number one mobile phone manufacturer.
Strategy Analytics has published data for mobile phone shipments in the second quarter showing Nokia extending its lead over its rivals. According to the figures, 96.7 million handsets were shipped in the second quarter and Nokia s share of this grew to 37.2% from 35.4% in the first quarter.
Strategy Analytics calculated that 96.7 million cell phones were shipped globally in the second quarter, and the research firm reiterated its forecast for 417 million units in 2002, up from 393 million last year.
Despite rising competition from vendors in the Asia Pacific and China regions, the top five vendors maintained their control of the handset market in the second quarter accounting for 78% of global shipments. The company noted that Motorola, Samsung, and LG have increased their market positions by delivering innovative handset designs and features to satisfy increasingly demanding carrier customers.
