Gore puts VCSEL business up for sale

Gore Photonics, a manufacturer of VCSEL-based transceivers for parallel optical interconnects, is now on the market.
W L Gore & Associates has decided to sell its fiber-optic business, as part of its strategy to be a leading supplier of electrical interconnects. Gore Photonics is a leading supplier of VCSEL-based parallel optic arrays for very-short-reach interconnection between electronic components and systems. In addition to Gore’s 850 nm VCSEL technology, the company has demonstrated optically pumped 1310 nm VCSEL structures targeting longer-reach applications.

"We are refocusing Gore s electronic components business on high-performance electrical interconnects and materials, our core technology," stated Russell Shaller, general manager of Gore Photonics. "As we seek interested buyers for the fiber-optic business, we will continue to fully support the needs of our customers and meet our commitments to them."

Despite the current industry downturn, Gore Photonics says that is experiencing "robust sales growth" for its family of nLIGHTEN parallel optic products. Gore claims to be one of only two parallel optic component manufacturers to have successfully launched 12 x 1.25 Gbit/s modules, which are currently being shipped for use in production systems.

The company is one of three voting participants in the industry standard SNAP-12 multi-source agreement (MSA) for 12 x 2.7 Gbit/s modules, and it has licensed the only other production qualified parallel optic module format based on a four-wide design originating from Alvesta. In addition, the company has licensed and initiated sales of an OC-192 transponder based on the 12 x 1.25 Gbit/s optical module.

Gore acquired its 850 nm VCSEL technology through the acquisition of Optical Concepts, a spin-off from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
