Umicore to develop SiC substrates with ESA
The project broadens the collaboration between Umicore and ESA, which includes germanium for space solar cells. According to Umicore, satellite communications is a fast-developing application that requires more powerful GaN-based devices built on SiC substrates. This technology will enable higher levels of efficiency, i.e. more power with reduced weight and smaller chips at acceptable costs.
The program will concentrate on developing SiC substrates with high crystalline perfection and a minimum of surface defects, and prepares a technological platform for Umicore’s future presence in the SiC market. In the longer term, the company intends to become an important player in the production and commercialization of SiC substrates for a variety of electronic and optoelectronic applications.
In June, Umicore s proposed deal to buy SiC substrate and epiwafer supplier Sterling Semiconductor from Uniroyal fell through.
