Newport and EM4 establish partnership

Newport and EM4 have announced a collaboration intended to lower the cost of fiber-optic component assembly.
Newport Corporation (Irvine, CA) and EM4 Photonics (Burlington, MA) have signed a letter of intent to jointly develop and refine photonics device manufacturing equipment, as well as to establish an equipment supplier relationship.

As part of the transaction, EM4 will provide Newport with an exclusive license to use portions of its proprietary optoelectronic packaging technology. EM4 provides active optoelectronic component package design and manufacturing services, and lists its core capabilities as design, development, production and reliability testing of active fiber-optic components.

Newport, a supplier of automated assembly and test systems, precision robotics tools, sub-micron positioning systems, vibration isolation and optical subsystems, will become a preferred supplier to EM4 for all test and assembly equipment to support the company’s optical manufacturing services (OMS) business.

“The combination of Newport’s automation expertise and our manufacturing processes and services allows for tremendous advancements in the evolution of bringing lower cost active optoelectronic devices to the market,” said Basil Garabet, EM4’s CEO. “This alliance with Newport will allow us to take advantage of the latest automation solutions for high volume manufacturing, while focusing on our core business of providing optical component and sub-assembly manufacturing services.”
