10 Gbit/s datacom transceiver use to reach $3.26 billion in 2006

According to a new ElectroniCast Corp. market study, the global consumption of 10 Gbit/s data communication transceivers will rise from $68.7 million in 2001 to $3.26 billion in 2006. ElectroniCast’s 10 Gbit/s Datacom Transceiver study provides detailed in-depth analysis of transceiver type and growth opportunities by market application, wavelength physical layer (PHY) type, and source for years 2001-2011.

"With the emergence of 10 Gbps datacom transceivers, the datacom and telecom markets have converged at approximately the same data rate for the first time," said ElectroniCast President Stephen Montgomery. "As a result, there will be technology and product sharing across these two market segments. Initially, the 10 Gbit/s technology and transceiver modules that have already been developed for telecom will find use in datacom applications. However, datacom will always be asking for low-cost connectorized transceiver modules.

Agere and Infineon enter WLAN alliance

Agere Systems and Infineon Technologies have formed a broad alliance to jointly develop high-performance chips based on the 802.11 standard in order to offer next-generation wireless networking solutions. This technology offers 20 times higher bandwidth than current wireless networks and will reach up to 54 megabits per second (Mbit/s) to support enterprise solutions, multimedia entertainment and home applications. Both companies will independently market next-generation wireless LAN products to manufacturers of communications, computing and multimedia equipment.

Agere will provide its wireless LAN system architecture, multimode media access controller (MAC) and driver software to the joint solution, while Infineon will contribute its advanced dual-band radio technology and wide-band power amplifier chips. Agere and Infineon will co-develop the physical layer (PHY) component for the reference designs, combining intellectual property and experience from each company.

Tyco to manufacture 2D VCSEL transceivers

Xanoptix, a manufacturer of parallel optical transceivers based on 2D arrays of VCSELs, has signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar joint strategic business agreement with Tyco Electronics to promote Xanoptix’s XTM Series of optical transceiver products.

As part of the alliance, Tyco Electronics will manufacture transceivers offering up to 72 channels terminated in a single MT style fiber optic connector with up to 245 Gbit/s aggregate bandwidth. When compared to existing solutions, the XTM series offers dramatically improved speed, power consumption, and density.

Agility and Opto Speed appoint distributors

Agility Communications, a manufacturer of widely tunable lasers for the metro-core, switching, and long-haul markets, has announced the company s entry into the Chinese optical networking marketplace through a distribution agreement and partnership with Luster Lightwave.

Opto Speed, a developer and manufacturer of optoelectronic modules for communications, test & measurement, medical and defense markets, has signed a distribution agreement with EL-GEV Electronics Ltd., an Israeli distributor of electronic and optoelectronic components and subassemblies.
