Sumitomo Electric opens 6-inch GaAs wafer plant

Sumitomo Electric has opened its first compound semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States, a 90,000 square foot center for making 6-inch GaAs substrates.
Sumitomo Electric Semiconductor Materials Inc. recently held the grand opening ceremony for its new 6-inch GaAs manufacturing center in Hillsboro, Oregon. Construction of the 90,000 square foot building was completed in November 2001. Pilot production began in January 2002 and product qualification was conducted in the spring with epitaxial foundries and device manufacturers. Volume production began in June, and the total initial investment for the new facility was $20 million.

The ceremony was attended by many of the largest users of GaAs wafers from the United States, state and local government officials from Oregon, and senior management from Sumitomo Electric in Japan. Hishashi Sakamoto, President of Sumitomo Electric Semiconductor Materials, said, "In establishing a manufacturing presence in this country, it was our sincere wish to be closer to our North American customer base, so as to provide better service and form closer relationships. We can already see that manufacturing here in North America will bring us many benefits such as timely communication and quick response to our customers."

This is Sumitomo Electric s first compound semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States. Other manufacturing locations for compound semiconductor materials include Itami and Kobe in Japan and Hsinchu in Taiwan. Sumitomo Electric is the world s leading manufacturer of gallium arsenide and indium phosphide substrates. The company also supplies device manufacturers with a variety of epitaixal wafers grown by OMVPE, MBE, VPE and LPE.
