Alfalight wins $15 million in third round funding

Alfalight is continuing to attract funding for its aluminium-free laser diodes from today's very cautiuous venture capitalists.
Alfalight, a manufacturer of high-powered laser diodes based in Madison, Wisconsin, has announced a third venture funding round of $15 million. This round of funding brings the total investment since the company’s founding to $49.1 million.

Alfalight was founded in 1998 by a team from the Reed Center of Photonics at the University of Wisconsin to commercialize high-power diode lasers with aluminum free active regions. The company is developing several high-power diode laser products operating in the 700-1600 nm region targeting applications in the telecommunications, military and industrial industries.

“Given the current economic environment and the reduced investments in start-up technology companies, our ability to close such a significant round validates the strength of our defined market opportunities, the company’s technology and the team bringing it to market,” said Eric Apfelbach, Alfalight’s president and CEO. “This funding will assist Alfalight to commercialize laser diode modules that are significantly more powerful and less costly per Watt than what is available today, and also to achieve its goal to further automate the diode laser and packaging production process.”
