OEIC consumption to reach $1.9 billion by 2006

Global consumption of optoelectronic ICs is set to grow rapidly from $320 million in 2002 to $1.9 billion in 2006, says ElectroniCast.
According to a new report from ElectroniCast, global consumption of optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) will reach $1.94 billion by 2006.

The report, "Optoelectronic Integrated Circuits (OEICs) and Related Devices/Parts", presents a detailed competitive analysis, 1999-2002 history and 2003-2006 forecast of OEIC applications and of the consumption of OEICs, devices and parts.

Although the market for OEICs reached $585 million in 2000 (67% hybrid, 33% monolithinc), it subsequently fell to $320 million in 2002. ElectroniCast predicts a rebound to $572 million in 2003, a growth rate of 79% compared to last year.

Between 2002 and 2006, the market for OEICs will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 57%. Monolithic integration will experience the most rapid growth; the market share of monolithic OEICs will increase from 41% of the total in 2003 to 46% in 2006.

Telecommunication equipment transceivers will lead OEIC applications, but the fastest growth will be achieved in military/aerospace equipment consumption, gaining a 36% value share by 2006.

According to the report, competition in OEIC provisioning is now undergoing dramatic change, due to restructuring of traditional leading OEIC producers, the emergence of startups that are now beginning commercial shipments, and the transition from silicon to compound semiconductor materials.
