Integration keeps the PA module market growing
While RF component prices continue to decline, packing more functions into PA modules is ensuring that the market value of these will grow.
A new report from Strategy Analytics, RF Components Demand from Cellular Handsets, states that although handsets shipment volumes have recovered and should increase at 13% per year over the next five years, continued erosion in component prices will nearly offset this growth. The exception will be in the $1.2 billion market for handset power amplifiers, which will grow at 8% per year from 2002 to 2007.
"Most of today s PA modules incorporate amplifier chips, impedance matching elements and passives,” said Christopher Taylor, director of the Strategy Analytics RF component service. “New PA modules have started to include antenna switch and other functions, and this has helped to offset price declines. Our detailed forecast shows that this trend will make PA modules the fastest growing revenue segment in handsets.”
