Ericsson sells optoelectronics business

Ericsson has become the latest company to divest itself of its optoelectronics unit as it focuses on its core business.
Sweden’s Northlight Optronics has bought Ericsson Optoelectronics, a designer and manufacturer of long wavelength optical transmitters and receivers. The product range includes DFB-EA and DFB laser transmitters, and high speed receivers up to 10 Gbit/s.

Northlight Optronics designs and manufactures optical transmitters and receivers operating up to 10 Gbit/s for long haul, metro and high speed LAN applications. The deal is effective immediately and Ericsson Optoelectronics 48 employees will be transferred to the new company. The value of the deal was not revealed, but Ericsson has taken a 9.9% stake in the company.

The sale is part of Ericsson s ongoing drive to focus on its core business of providing systems and services for telecom operators. In June last year Ericsson sold its microelectronics business to Infineon for $378 million.
