Zia and Aculight demonstrate quantum dot ECL

Zia Laser is collaborating with Aculight to demonstrate an external cavity laser containing a quantum dot-based gain chip.
Aculight Corporation, a developer of laser technologies including external cavity lasers (ECLs), and Zia Laser, a manufacturer of quantum dot (QD) lasers, are to demonstrate a broadly-tunable QD ECL at the Photonics West show this week.

The ECL combines Zia’s GaAs-based 1300 nm QD gain chip with Aculight’s external cavity design. Zia’s dots-in-a-well (DWELL) technology enables broad tunability through engineered QD nanostructures grown within the active region of the laser.

The QD ECL is capable of tuning over a 100 nm range with a maximum CW output power of 3 mW. Combining technologies from Aculight and Zia enables spectroscopic measurements over a broader tuning range than is possible with more conventional quantum well devices.

The laser on display can be adapted to include access to several wavelength regions, rapid tuning capability, coupling to single-mode or multi-mode fibers, and generation of a broadband output. Applications include medical diagnostics (spectroscopic and imaging modalities), test and measurement, and spectroscopy.

Based in Bothell, Washington, Aculight Corporation develops innovative laser technologies for medical, industrial and national defense applications and has extensive experience in the areas of diode-pumped solid-state lasers, nonlinear optics, and external cavity diode lasers.
