Skyworks and RFMD provide GSM/GPRS solutions

The rivalry between RFMD and Skyworks Solutions has continued with further announcements that both companies are providing radio solutions for handsets that are compatible with GSM/GPRS processors.
Last week, RFMD announced that its Polaris Total Radio was compatible with a new cellular processor developed by Intel (see Related Links). This week, RFMD announced its product is also compatible with a baseband processor developed by National Semiconductor (see below).

Meanwhile, Skyworks has gone further by revealing that its GSM/GPRS direct conversion transceiver and power amplifier (PA) module products have been selected by Maxon Telecom Corp. Ltd. for integration in new cellular handsets that will also feature Intel s PXA800F cellular processor.

Maxon s new data-enabled MX-E320 "Entertainment Phone," available by the end of this year, will incorporate Skyworks second-generation single-chip 8 x 8 mm CX74063 direct conversion transceiver and 8 x 10 mm CX77315 PA module with integrated power control functionality. The MX-E320 features two color LCD displays, a built-in digital camera, FM stereo radio, music/video players, Web browsing and exciting new games.

"Skyworks RF and PA technologies are unparalleled and when coupled with Intel s baseband processor enabled us to optimize our cellular phone architecture to create an entirely new class of entertainment-enabled phones that will allow consumers to experience a variety of emerging applications without sacrificing handset size or battery life," said Hyeon Kim, president and CEO of Korean company Maxon.

RFMD radio compatible with National processor

RF Micro Devices announced that its Polaris Total Radio solution has been selected by National Semiconductor as a key part of National s GSM/GPRS system solution.

By achieving compatibility between the Polaris RF chipset and National Semiconductor s GSM/GPRS baseband processor through an innovative digital interface, RFMD and National Semiconductor enable handset developers with a complete, highly integrated GSM/GPRS Class 12 solution that minimizes external components and power consumption while maximizing performance.

Jean-Louis Bories, executive VP of National s Wireless and IA Group, said, "National selected the Polaris Total Radio based on its superior level of integration and advanced product attributes, specifically its digital interface to our LMX3415 baseband."

The RFMD Polaris Total Radio is a highly integrated quad-band transceiver with power amplifier module that performs all major functions of the RF section, including both transmit and receive.
