Celeritek unveils PA module without passives

A new W-CDMA power amplifier module from Celeritek is the first such part that does not contain passive components.
Celeritek has announced a power amplifier module that it describes as the world s first to use Passive-Free Technology (PFT). This means that the module does not contain passive components, consisting only of a molded lead frame and InGaP HBT die. Celeritek claims that its competitors use between 4 and 7 passive components within their equivalent module packages.

Celeritek s first PFT product is a W-CDMA module, the CHP2219-ML, which targets 3G markets in Asia, North America and Europe. The module is offered in a compact, 4 x 4 mm 10-pin lead-frame package with a thickness of only 0.85 mm. The dimensions of the package, which is 30% thinner than other PA modules, provides handset customers with more space to add new features and functionality while at the same time significantly reducing the total bill of materials.

To enable longer handset talk and standby times, Celeritek has improved the efficiency of its modules. The CHP2219-ML has a power-added efficiency of 41% for W-CDMA operation at 1920-1980 MHz. Other characteristics include an output power of 27.0 dBm and gain of 27.0 dB with ACLR of –40 at a bias of 3.6 V.

"PFT is a development made possible by our strategic acquisition of Tavanza last November," said Tamer Husseini, Celeritek s president and CEO, "and we are pleased to release the world s first PA modules that use no external passive components within the matched module."

Mehdi Soltan, President and CTO of Tavanza, said, "We are extremely pleased to have begun sampling of our CDMA modules. Successful introduction of PFT-based amplifier modules was a necessary step to reduce costs. We believe the combination of Tavanza s technology and Celeritek s resources will prove a winning team and we look forward to a wide adoption of our current and future products."

Damian McCann, VP of Advanced Marketing and Technology, went on to say, "PFT significantly reduces the cost of integration, lowers the overall height, improves quality through simplified construction and significantly improves the heat dissipation since the device is sitting directly on a copper leadframe."

Celeritek is applying PFT to a broad range of frequencies and products that will further reduce board space and cost when compared to alternative solutions. The CHP2219-ML PA module is sampling now, priced at $2.00 in qty s of 100K.
