News in brief: Giga Epitaxy Technology, Aixtron

In Taiwan, Giga Epitaxy Technology has received ISO9001 and ISO14001 certification, while Aixtron's new subsidiary will be officially opened next week.
Giga Epitaxy Technology (GET), a Taiwanese subsidiary of Hitachi Cable that manufactures GaAs-based epitaxial wafers, has received ISO9001 and ISO14001 certification.

GET was assessed by EAQA Ltd. and was found to comply with the quality management system requirement of ISO9001:2000 and the environmental management system requirement of ISO14001:1996.

GET, which produces MOVPE-grown HBTs, HEMTs and MESFETs, estimates that it has a production capacity of 3000 6-inch wafers per month. After several customers qualified its products in 2002, the company expects that sales will increase considerably during 2003.

Aixtron to open Taiwan office

Aixtron Taiwan Co., Ltd. will celebrate the Grand Opening Ceremony on April 15, 2003 of its new facility in the Science Based Industrial Park (SBIP) in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The Aixtron subsidiary will focus on advanced research and development in CVD-related technologies for the Taiwanese optoelectronic industry.

The scope of Aixtron Taiwan is to perform production-oriented research together with its Taiwanese customers and to provide local support. Christian Geng, general manager of Aixtron Taiwan, said "Whereas our other laboratories worldwide are aiming more at fundamental research, the clear orientation on production in Taiwan gives us the chance to concentrate our development work on manufacturing aspects."

The importance of this technology is endorsed by an R&D grant from the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Taiwanese government supports Aixtron Taiwan s R&D efforts through funding a joint research project with OES/ITRI (Opto-Electronics & Systems Laboratories / Industrial Technology Research Institute) which will develop technology to boost the performance of Taiwan s GaN-based optoelectronics for white lighting and UV lasers.
