News in brief: TriQuint, Alfalight and Palomar

TriQuint has raised its revenue forecast for the December 2003 quarter, Alfalight has received Telcordia qualification for some of its diode laser products, and Palomar has achieved ISO9001:2000 certification.
TriQuint raises guidance

TriQuint Semiconductor has raised its financial guidance for the quarter ending December 31, 2003. The company expects its revenue to be between $85 million and $87 million, with a gross margin between 32% and 33%, operating income at breakeven to a slight profit, and a net profit after tax of between $4 million and $5 million.

Previous forecasts suggested revenue in the range of $80 million to $83 million, gross margin of 30% to 32% and a loss per share of between $0.02 and $0.04.

Ralph Quinsey, President and CEO, stated, “We are raising our guidance for Q4 2003 because our shipments and bookings have been very strong so far this quarter. End market demand for our products for wireless phone applications has been extremely strong. We continue to gain share with our new products and continue to execute our plan to reduce costs and improve profitability.”

Alfalight lasers achieve Telcordia qualification

High-power diode laser manufacturer Alfalight, Inc. has announced that its 1.8 W diode lasers operating at 976 nm and 955 nm have met and exceeded the reliability assurance standards set forth in the Telcordia GR-468-CORE specification (“Generic Reliability Assurance Requirements for Optoelectronics Devices used in Telecommunications Equipment”).

Alfalight is the first manufacturer to achieve Telcordia qualification for multimode diode lasers at this level of power.

Based on the results of the testing, at 2 W, a FIT (failure in test) rate of 96 at a 90% confidence level was estimated, as well as a median life of greater than 75 years. 120 diode lasers were placed in automatic power control (APC) multi-cell arrangements operated in a matrix of different power and temperature stress conditions. This is the first report of a detailed reliability assessment of Aluminum Free Active-region (ALFA) diode lasers under APC conditions. An additional 187 diode lasers were placed on an accelerated life-test at a constant current of 3 A, with over 1,800,000 device hours collected.

Palomar Technologies receives ISO 9001:2000 certification

Palomar Technologies, a manufacturer of automated, high-precision assembly systems, has been certified as meeting the requirements of ISO 9001/ANSI-ASQ Q9001:2000 and is registered by SGS.

Palomar was assessed and certified as meeting the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 for design, manufacturing, sales, servicing, and marketing of automated assembly equipment serving the optoelectronic, wireless, disk drive, automotive, aerospace and defense, and medical industries.
