NEC ready to ramp 10 Gbit/s DFB lasers from April
NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices, Ltd. and NEC Electronics (Europe) have developed new distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode modules for use in backbone and metropolitan area networks (MAN).
The modules are designed for DWDM wavelengths from 1530-1560 nm with 50 GHz (0.4 nm) spacing based on ITU recommendations.
Two types of device are available with four models in total. The NX8560SJ Series transmits at 10 Gbit/s and the NX8567SA Series offers a transmission rate of 2.5 Gbit/s.
Mass production of the new laser diode modules is slated to start in April 2004, with annual shipments of 10,000 units forecast for all 4 models in total.
The laser diode modules feature a built-in wavelength monitor with an etalon filter, eliminating the need for a separate optical transmitter and external monitor module and enabling the precision-controlled emission wavelength required in DWDM systems.
NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices will be exhibiting these new laser diode modules and related products at the 4th Fiber Optics Expo (FOE2004) - Asia s largest optical communications exhibition – which is being held at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto Ward, Tokyo, from January 28.
