News in brief: RFMD and TriQuint ride market boom
RFMD’s market share rockets in Taiwan
Microelectronic device manufacturer RF Micro Devices has seen its market share of the mobile phone power amplifier (PA) market in Taiwan grow from just 23% to almost 75% in the past year.
According to a recent report issued by the Taiwan-based analyst Market Intelligence Center (MIC), the Taiwanese mobile phone market grew strongly in the fourth quarter of 2003 to reach 1.6 million units.
MIC added that in 2004, the Taiwanese market would be likely to saturate, with intensifying competition between over 100 brands fighting for market share.
RFMD attributes the strong growth to the success of its PowerStar PA module in particular, and says that the Taiwanese market has helped propel its global PA market share to approximately 50%.
TriQuint revises financial guidance upwards
High-performance RFIC specialist TriQuint has raised its estimated revenue for the quarter ending March 31.
Having previously expected to bring in $81-83 million, the company now believes that the figure will be $85-87 million.
TriQuint president and CEO Ralph Quinsey said that strong demand from the company’s end markets had triggered the upturn. However, TriQuint still expects to record a loss per share of 1-2 cents in the quarter.
