Eudyna ready to take on GaAs device leaders
Strategy Analytics says that Eudyna Devices could become one of the top five GaAs device manufacturers in the world within two years.
Eudyna Devices is the new name for the consolidated compound semiconductor manufacturing operations of Fujitsu Quantum Devices (FQD) and Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) - see related story.
According to the market analyst company, Eudyna could leapfrog companies such as M/A-COM and NEC to challenge RF Micro Devices, Skyworks and TriQuint.
Strategy Analytics says that FQD was already positioned in sixth place in the GaAs device merchant market in 2002-2003, which it values at $2.2-2.4 billion.
Strategy Analytics’ Asif Anwar estimates that SEI revenues of only $15-30 million would be sufficient when added to the FQD figures to take Eudyna into the top five.
Anwar also points out that both companies have demonstrated the capability to make InP devices in the past, and that Fujitsu’s research and development operation has made progress in developing GaN amplifiers.
He says that this gives Eudyna the scope to cover potential emerging applications such as 40 Gbps fiber-optics and GaN power amplifiers for 3G wireless base stations.
