RFMD targets $1 billion revenue by 2007

Following a strategic realignment, RF Micro Devices is expecting its annual revenue to exceed $1 billion within three years.

Top-tier RFIC manufacturer RF Micro Devices (RFMD) believes that its annual revenue will reach the billion-dollar level by 2007.

The company has realigned its strategy around three core business units with a view to exploiting the strong growth it expects in the overall wireless communications market.

RFMD’s president and CEO Bob Bruggeworth explained that the company structure would align the company’s business more closely with those of its customers.

He expects that the total market addressed by the three business units - cellular, wireless connectivity and infrastructure - will grow to about $6 billion within three years.

“We will continue to invest in the assets and resources necessary to grow in each of our core markets,” said Bruggeworth. “We forecast [that] these investments will enable the company to exceed one billion dollars in revenue within three years.”

RFMD’s cellular unit will focus on devices and modules for handset applications, including power amplifiers (PA) and the recently-introduced SiGe-based Polaris Total Radio transceiver, which is now ramping into production.

The total addressable market for RFMD’s cellular division is estimated at around $2.5 billion currently.

The second business unit is focused on wireless connectivity applications, such as Bluetooth and wireless LAN. This market covers more GaAs-based PA products, plus RFMD’s CMOS radio processors and modems.

The third business unit – covering wireless infrastructure – will concentrate on components for wireless base stations. Currently, these include GaAs-based driver amplifiers and PAs.

RFMD is also developing GaN devices for wide-bandwidth base stations PAs, which it expects to become a disruptive technology in the wireless industry.
