Osram and Vishay sign white LED licence deal

Vishay Semiconductor will be able to manufacture and sell white InGaN-based LEDs, thanks to a licensing agreement with Osram.

Global semiconductor device maker Vishay Semiconductor has agreed a licensing deal with lighting company Osram concerning white and SMD LEDs.

On payment of a licence fee, Vishay will acquire the right to manufacture and sell white LEDs and surface-mount (SMT) LEDs for high-current applications such as interior lighting for cars.

The white LED technology was developed by the Germany-based Osram subsidiary Osram Opto Semiconductors. It features a blue-emitting InGaN LED converted to white by a suitable phosphor.

“We are sure that both partners will profit from this agreement,” said Osram Opto’s president and CEO Rüdiger Müller. “Yet another global LED manufacturer has underlined the importance of our patent portfolio.”

Osram Opto Semiconductors has already licensed the technology to Nichia, Rohm, Everlight, Lite-On and Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

California-based Vishay has manufacturing facilities in 17 countries worldwide. “Vishay is gaining a new opportunity to expand its white LED offering with new devices for the automotive industry,” said Dieter Wunderlich, executive VP of semiconductors at Vishay.
