In brief: IQE and Cyberlux

IQE reports flat revenue with gross profit moving further into the red, and Cyberlux receives a patent for LED-based emergency lighting.
IQE cuts staff to reduce losses
UK-based epi-wafer vendor IQE has reported revenue of £8.0 million ($14.5 million) for the half-year ended 30 June 2004. Sales in the period were up £0.1 million sequentially, but down £0.8 million from the equivalent period of 2003.

Operating loss for the recent half year was £5.6 million, while the loss at the gross margin level was £1.9 million, or 24% - this compares with 20% and 16% for the two previous half-years, sequentially.

IQE s cash position weakened from £21.7 million at the start of the year to £15.5 million by 30 June. IQE has reduced headcount by 40 in the recent period in an attempt to cut costs.

"Further progress has been made in the first half of 2004 in reducing the group s cash breakeven revenue point to $26.5 million, and our plan remains to be exiting 2004 in an ongoing breakeven situation," said Drew Nelson, IQE s CEO.

Cyberlux gains emergency lighting patents
Lighting manufacturer Cyberlux Corporation, of Durham, NC, has been granted broad protection for its emergency lighting technology by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The technology enables high light output at power consumption levels below competing technologies.

US patent 6,752,515 provides protection across 24 claims for lighting systems capable of generating long-term interim lighting. In particular, it is concerned with using an LED lighting system capable to provide prolonged illumination.
