Skyworks in front as RFIC makers feel the heat
Skyworks Solutions was the only major US-based GaAs IC manufacturer to post a net profit in the recent round of earnings releases.
The Woburn, MA, company saw revenue increase 45% year-on-year to $218 million. The figure also represented a 5% increase on the prior quarter.
On the bottom line, Skyworks recorded a net profit of $18.1 million, up from $14.8 million in the prior quarter and a reversal of the $43 million loss it posted one year ago.
Meanwhile, RF Micro Devices (RFMD) saw its revenue drop 10% on the prior quarter to $149.1 million. The figure also represents a fall of almost 9% year-on-year.
That translated to a net loss of $6.7 million, compared with a $10.6 million profit in the equivalent quarter last year. RFMD says that the drop in revenue reflected a weak cellular handset market in Asia.
Of the smaller GaAs manufacturers, TriQuint Semiconductors and Anadigics both recorded a loss.
TriQuint s revenue was $89.7 million, down $2.9 million on the prior quarter, turning the break-even bottom-line figure recorded then into a $4.1 million loss this time.
A raft of orders for its power amplifier products, primarily from Chinese handset makers, and a revenue increase of $2.4 million on the prior quarter helped Anadigics narrow its loss to $8.3 million from $11.7 million previously.
