In brief: Crystal IS and ATMI

AlN substrate manufacturer Crystal IS enters into a licensing agreement with Cree and ATMI names Doug Neugold as CEO.

Crystal IS, a US-based producer of native AlN single crystal substrates, has completed a patent licensing agreement with Cree. The license covers a portfolio of Cree s patents involving crystalline AlN manufacturing technology.

"This licensing agreement will give us greater flexibility in expanding our AlN substrate manufacturing capability and represents an important milestone in securing our business strategy," said Crystal IS CEO, Leo Schowalter.

"We are hopeful that our customers and potential new customers will see this agreement with Cree as an important step in our company s growth - one which enhances our long term viability in the marketplace," added Keith Evans, senior VP of business development at Crystal IS.

Earlier this year Cree, a producer of SiC substrates that are used for the fabrication of blue and white LEDs, purchased ATMI s GaN substrate division for $10.25 million (see related story)
