In brief: AXT, IBM and Aixtron

AXT revamps its executive board, IBM wins a $5.8 million contract for SiGe development, and Aixtron confirms the appointment of William Elder as chairman of its silicon semiconductor business.
AXT makes executive changes
Compound semiconductor substrate manufacturer AXT has introduced a new organizational structure that includes the creation of the positions of chief operating officer (COO) and chief technology officer (CTO).

Minsheng Lin will join AXT as COO, effective from July 11. Lin, a former employee of silicon wafer manufacturer Helitek, will oversee the company's day-to-day operations in Fremont, CA, and Beijing, China.

AXT has also transferred Morris Young from CEO of the company's China operations to CTO, and moved Davis Zhang from president of China operations to president of Joint Venture Operations.

"This structure integrates the operation of our China facility more closely with our Fremont operations, and allows us to focus on our technology development and our growing joint venture operations," remarked AXT s CEO Phil Yin.

IBM awarded $5.8 million
The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has awarded a $5.8 million contract to the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

The funding will be used to develop SiGe technology for military and commercial applications including multi-gigabit per second wireless communications, high resolution radar and integrated remote sensors.

All the work on the 14 month contract will be performed in Yorktown, NY.

Aixtron appoints William Elder to the board
Epitaxial equipment manufacturer Aixtron has confirmed the appointment of William Elder to its executive board.

Elder was previously CEO of Genus, which was acquired by Aixtron on March 14 (see related story), and now holds the role of chairman of Aixtron's silicon semiconductor business.
