Sensors Unlimited wins $4.5 million contract

Sensors Unlimited has been awarded a $4.5 million DARPA contract to develop a dual-wavelength camera capable of identifying a human target at 100m under no-moon conditions.

InGaAs camera manufacturer Sensors Unlimited Inc. (SUI) has won a $4.5 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) to develop a 1280 x 1024 focal plane array (FPA).

The FPA will form the basis of an uncooled dual wavelength camera that is sensitive between 0.4 µm -1.7 µm and capable of night vision imaging.

SUI claims that the development of the FPA will deliver a breakthrough in the performance of this form of detector.

The company is targeting a room-temperature dark current density for the FPA of less than 2nA/cm2, and a readout noise of less than 10 electrons. The specifications, which will be met when the camera is operating at video rates, will be achieved through advances in detector design, growth and fabrication.

The FPA will enable DARPA to fulfill its goal of identifying a human target at 100m under no-moon conditions.
