Kopin's joint venture readies for LED production
KoBrite, the joint-venture company set up by Kopin to mass-produce LED chips, has officially opened its Chinese facilities.
The new three-building campus in Dongguan, close to Hong Kong, will host GaN-based LED die production activity, although the epitaxial growth stage in the chip fabrication process will take place in Taiwan.
The Dongguan facility comprises a 20,000 square foot cleanroom, an office and a dormitory. According to KoBrite, it is now ready to begin making chips in volume.
Back in February this year, Kopin revealed its plans to set up KoBrite (see related story) in a joint-venture deal.
Taiwan-based Bright LED Electronics Corporation is one of the other partners in the joint venture. Its subsidiary, American Bright, markets the company's LED products in the US.
KoBrite is headed up by Sandy Liaw, who acts as both CEO and president of the company.
"The low cost structure of manufacturing in China, the proximity to huge and expanding markets, local management expertise and state-of-the-art technology should bode very well for the future of KoBrite," said Liaw.
Since spinning off its LED activity, Kopin's compound semiconductor activity has concentrated on its core expertise in the manufacture of GaAs HBT epiwafers.
