Cree licenses white LED patent to Kingbright
Cree has licensed its white LED patent to one of its chip customers, Taiwan-based manufacturer of LED-based lamps and displays Kingbright Electronic.
Kingbright's license of US patent 6,600,175 will allow the company to add a color converting phosphor to Cree's blue chips, and then incorporate these white-light emitters into its products.
According to the US chip maker, Kingbright will be using Cree's LED chips exclusively in its white LED products.
"Kingbright has distinguished itself with years of dedicated support for Cree technology and respect for intellectual property," remarked Cree's general manager of optoelectronics Scott Schwab.
Wen Joe Song, Kingbright's CEO, said that Cree's white light technology will provide major advantages to the company's product line. "Our target market includes major US and multi-national companies for which avoiding intellectual property disputes are critical."
Kingbright is following in the footsteps of Stanley Electric, Rohm, and Cotco, which all received a license from Cree for the 175 patent earlier this year.
