In brief: Skyworks, AXT, Veeco and Picolight
US-based RF chip maker Skyworks Solutions has posted sales of $198.3 million for the first fiscal quarter of 2006 and a profit of $4.3 million.
The company's cellular baseband product area added $17.8 million, a $8.7 million sequential decline, which was said to reflect the shift from "tier three suppliers to leading handset OEMs". The RF solution and linear products portfolio contributed $180.5 million.
"Despite traditional handset market seasonality, we forecast March quarterly revenue of $180 million, driven by our ability to capture increasing semiconductor content per platform," remarked Skyworks CFO Allan Kline.
Veeco launches Process Equipment groupVeeco Instruments has launched a Process Equipment group that it says will maximize the growth opportunities in the data storage and HB-LED industries.
The group, which will be headed by Robert Oates, the former boss of Veeco's Data Storage Operation, is expected to generate sales of at least $260 million this year.
AXT unveils raw material productsCompound semiconductor materials supplier AXT has launched its raw materials product family, which includes 4N, 6N, and 7N gallium, germanium, and arsenic.
The raw material products are the result of AXT's joint ventures with five Chinese companies located in the Beijing and Nanjing area.
Picolight appoints new head of salesOptical transceiver manufacturer Picolight has appointed Doug Smidl as the company's vice president, sales and customer service.
"Doug's sales, customer focus and leadership will be important as we ramp volume production of our 1310nm VCSELs and other 850 nm short-wavelength products lines," said Picolight CEO Steve Hane.
