Avago launches into high-power LED sector
Avago Technologies, the chipmaker previously known as Agilent's semiconductor products group, has entered the high-power LED market with the first in a series of 1 W emitters.
Designed for use in new applications such as outdoor lighting and display backlights, the InGaN-based LEDs are available in blue, green and, when coupled with a color-converting phosphor, white.
Previously, Avago had concentrated on lower-power LED products and had not competed so directly with companies such as Lumileds, Nichia and Cree in the high-power arena.
The new ASMT-MX00 products are said to be the first in a series of devices operating at 1 W power dissipation and 350 mA forward current.
The new line-up features green emitters producing a total luminous flux of 40 lumens, 10 lumens in blue and 35 lumens in white. White color temperatures ranging from 4500K to 10,000K are available.
Avago was sold by Agilent in late 2005 to two investment banks, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Silver Lake Partners (see related story).
