Lumileds Takes To The Road In New Applications

Philips-owned Lumileds has made some impressive inroads into cars made by Jaguar, Porsche, Audi and Lexus.

Production cars from Jaguar, Porsche and Lexus now feature a range of lighting applications that use power LEDs for the first time.

According to Philips Lumileds, its Luxeon 1 emitters are the first power LEDs to be used in back-up lamps and rear fog lamps. They can be found on the new Jaguar XK, where the back-up lamp includes four of the high-power sources, while the rear fog lamp features three such devices.

In addition, the Lexus IS now has a stop-tail lamp incorporating two Luxeon 1s, while the 2006 Porsche Turbo houses six emitters in a front indicator lamp. The Audi Q7 contains one of the same power LEDs in its side indicators.

In most of these applications, the LEDs used replace a 21 W incandescent bulb, while the side indicators in the Audi previously featured an array of lower-power LEDs.

Jason Posselt, marketing director for automotive products at the San Jose chip manufacturer, says that many more applications are in the pipeline: "Given the design cycles for automotive lighting projects, we expect to see a significant number of vehicles using Luxeon LEDs hit the road over the next few years," said Posselt.

Suggesting that LED-based lighting was now becoming cost-competitive with traditional technologies, Lumileds is pushing the technological limits of power LEDs in a bid to penetrate the vehicle headlamp sector.

Although LED-based headlamps remain to be seen on any production vehicles, Audi has expanded its use of Luxeon emitters in daytime running lights. First seen on the high-end A8W12 model in 2004, this technology now appears in Audi's S6.

• Lumileds parent company Philips reported that the LED manufacturing subsidiary was well on track to meet its growth and profitability targets as the Dutch firm revealed its latest financial performance to investors.

The Lumileds division posted a 22 per cent increase in sales revenue over the equivalent period in 2005, in line with Philips target of a 25 per cent increase in the year as a whole.
