Research reveals how blue LEDs emit light

A new understanding of the mechanism behind blue LED luminescence could lead to the development of revolutionary new families of light emitters.

Researchers in Japan say that they can now understand why InGaN material that features in commercial blue LEDs can emit bright light despite its poor crystal quality (Nature Materials 10.1038/nmat1726).
