In brief: Cree, Nitronex, OIPT, EV Group, Anadigics

Cree begins shipping a "lighting-class" warm-white LED; Nitronex moves HQ to Durham, NC; a new chief arrives at Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology; EV Group signs a new distribution deal; and Anadigics CEO Bami Bastani gets hall-of-famed.

Cree ships warm-white chips for lighting
Chip and packaged LED vendor Cree says that its new XLamp products represent the first "lighting-class" warm-white LED sources.

The LEDs deliver up to 124 lm at a color temperature of 3000 K when driven at 700 mA, and will offer lighting designers the option of deploying energy-efficient technology that gives an emission similar to that of traditional incandescent bulbs.

Although highly efficient white LED lamps have been around for some time, they have tended to produce a cooler white light more akin to that of fluorescent strip lights.

Cree's XR-E and XR-C power chips both feature in the new products.

Nitronex moves HQ
GaN-on-silicon transistor specialist Nitronex is to become a closer neighbor of Cree later this year, when it moves its corporate headquarters across North Carolina from Raleigh to Durham s Research Triangle Park area.

The switch, which should be completed by the end of the third quarter, is part of the company s plan to enhance its manufacturing capability, and it will also allow expansion of Nitronex s research and development efforts.

VP of sales and marketing Chris Rauh says that the new facility provides the necessary space to ramp up to volume manufacturing and to develop new products.

OIPT signs up new MD
Semiconductor processing equipment vendor Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology (OIPT) has hired a new managing director in the form of Andy Matthews.

Matthews has a background in the automotive business, and says that his experience in this highly competitive sector will help to ensure that OIPT is run as a lean, efficient company that can introduce new products quickly.

EV Group offers IR wafer inspection
EV Group has signed a distribution agreement with McBain Instruments that will allow it to offer McBain s near-infrared wafer inspection system to customers in combination with its own process equipment.

McBain s semi-automated reflected-light system is able to check all bonded wafers either before or after bonding takes place, depending on how it is configured.

Bastani enters NJ hall of fame
Anadigics CEO Bami Bastani has been inducted into the New Jersey High-Tech Hall of Fame, thanks to a nomination from the American Electronics Association.

"Receiving this award is a great honor," said Bastani, who has been at the helm of the GaAs chip manufacturer since 1998, and who also serves on the board of directors at Nitronex. "And it is evidence of the tremendous hard work and dedication of everyone at Anadigics."
