In brief: Alfalight, NEC, Philips Lumileds

Arasor buys Alfalight; NEC releases GaAs tri-band WiMAX switch; Philips Lumileds delivers 100 million Luxeon Flash chips.

Alfalight and Arasor converge
High power diode laser maker Alfalight is one of two companies being scooped up by telecoms solutions firm Arasor, in a combined $63 million all-share deal.

Alfalight s existing CEO Mohan Warrior will continue to manage the Madison, Wisconsin, InGaAs fab as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Arasor.

In combination with AOFR, the other purchase in the deal, Alfalight will provide Arasor with the means to make the optical chip, laser chip and optical coupler components used in all its products.

Arasor will also benefit from AOFR and Alfalight's existing top level cutomers, which include Avanex and Siemens.

NEC broadens WiMAX switch range
NEC Electronics has added a tri-band GaAs MMIC single pole, double throw antenna switch to its range.

The Japanese electronic giant s UPG2176T5N chip offers high power handling ability from 2 to 6 GHz, covering the three important 802.16 specification bands.

The six-pin package measures only 1.5 mm square and 0.37 mm high, and is also being distributed through California Eastern Laboratories and Mouser Electronics.

Bright lights, big party
The increasing inclusion of Philips Lumileds' LEDs in phone handsets has helped the company ship a mammoth 100 million Luxeon Flash units.

The San Jose, California, company say that its Flash LEDs are the only products available which can provide sufficient illumination for a two megapixel camera phone.

“Flash power LEDs provide the light output for video and still imaging without sacrificing battery life, ” said Richard Weiss, Lumiled's VP of Digital Imaging Business.

Lumileds did not name the lucky customer who received the 100 millionth unit.
